By two-fifteen Elizabeth was starting to lose her patience. She was all ready for the beach. She had her new striped bikini on under her shorts and T-shirt, and her beach bag was all packed. But Jeffrey was nowhere to be seen.
The door bell rang, and Elizabeth raced to the front door. "Oh, Cara," she said, her face falling. Not that she wasn't pleased to see the pretty brunette. She liked Cara more and more now that she was dating Steven. But she had been hoping it would be Jeffrey.
Cara looked distinctly uncomfortable. "I've come to pick up Jessica. We're heading for the beach," Cara said, avoiding Elizabeth's gaze as she came into the foyer. "How are you, Liz?" Her voice sounded forced, artificial.
"OK. Actually, I'm . . . maybe I should come with you guys. I'm waiting for Jeffrey, but he seems to be taking forever."
Cara fiddled nervously with her bracelet. "Liz," she said, "can I ask you something? And you have to promise to be totally honest. If you'd seen something . . . like, say you'd seen Steven with another girl, and you knew I didn't know about it. Would you tell me?" Her nervousness seemed to be increasing.
"It depends." Elizabeth thought it over. "I might not want to interfere. Especially since we're talking about my brother. Butâwell, I don't know." She stared at the brunette. "Why? You aren't trying to tell me something, are you?"
Cara looked miserable. "It's just that it makes me so angry! You're one of the sweetest people I know, Liz. And I can't stand the thought of anyone hurting you."
"Whoâ" Elizabeth frowned. "Cara, I know you're trying to tell me something. Is it about Jeffrey?"
Cara nodded. "I had a dentist appointment this morning in Riverside. I was driving back and I had to stop, so I turned into the rest area on Route Nine. And I saw Jeffrey's car." She was really upset. "Well, I figured I'd go over and say hi. Then I saw he wasn't alone. I thought it was you he was with, so I kept walking toward the car." She bit her lip. "It was Olivia, though. Not you. And he had his arms around her!"
Elizabeth felt the color drain from her face. "Are you sure?" she asked faintly.
Cara nodded. "You know I wouldn't say anything otherwise. No, it was definitely them. And they were definitely holding each other."
Elizabeth took a deep breath. Don't jump to conclusions, she told herself. Maybe there's a perfectly rational explanation for this.
But then her anger got the better of her, and she couldn't stand it anymore. Suddenly everything seemed to add up: Jeffrey spending so much time working on the magazine; Jeffrey choosing Olivia to be his model for the photo essay; Olivia and Roger breaking up. Elizabeth was sick and tired of defending Jeffrey, trying to make up excuses for him. What explanation could there possibly be? Jeffrey was in love with Olivia, that was all there was to it. And she wasn't going to sit here and wait for him to come over and tell her so himself.
